Is the Palma to Soller Train in Mallorca Worth Doing?
Having experienced the Palma to Sóller train firsthand, I’m sharing my thoughts on the ride, views, and value.
If you’re looking for a unique and scenic way to explore more of the island, then the historic Palma to Soller Train is an excellent choice.
This vintage train takes you on a narrow-gauge railway journey through the stunning Mallorcan countryside.
The Palma to Soller train takes about an hour, during which you’ll pass through tunnels, over viaducts, and through beautiful orange groves.
The train itself is a piece of history, with its wooden carriages and vintage design dating back to the early 1900s.
Many people extend their journey by taking a historic tram from Soller to Port de Soller. The tram ride is a 20-minute journey that winds its way through the town (and in some cases through the middle of restaurants!) before heading along the coast offering great views of the bay.

The Palma to Soller Train
To catch the train in Palma, you need to head to the Ferrocarril train station [Google Maps], which can be found next to the main train and bus stations. The station has a ticket office and toilets (but there are none on the train).
The timetable changes depending on the time of year. In the summer months there’s more than half a dozen trains in each direction, with the first train leaving Palma at 10.10, and the last train back departing Soller at 19:30. Regular tram services link up to continue the journey to Port de Soller.
The journey takes around one hour, covering 30km. There are no trains in January.
My favourite things about the Palma to Soller Train
1. A chance to see more of the island

After enjoying all the things to do in Palma, what better way to explore more of Mallorca without having to hire a car.
As you travel through the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, you’ll see stunning landscapes of orange groves, olive groves, and the rugged mountains.
The train passes through several tunnels, including the impressive 3,000-metre-long tunnel that passes through the Sierra de Alfàbia.
There’s also a fantastic viewing point when the train pauses briefly above Soller.
2. Experience a 100 year old train

Travelling on the Palma to Soller train is a unique experience that takes you back in time.
The vintage wooden train has been running since the early 1910s and some of the original carriages are still used.
Many others date back to the 1930s, and were used in Lisbon and Bilbao.
As you board the train, you’ll notice the charming wooden carriages – real lacquered wood and brass light fittings – and the sound of the old-fashioned whistle.
3. Exploring Puerto de Soller

This picturesque resort is known for its stunning natural beauty and is reached by taking a 20 minute historic tram ride from Soller.
After arriving, visitors can enjoy strolling along the promenade or relaxing on the beach.
The bay is surrounded by the Tramuntana mountain range, and the scenic waterfront is lined with cafes, restaurants, and boutique shops. The resort is also popular for yachts and sailboats with regular trips taking tourists out into the Mediterranean.
4. Historic Soller

As you arrive at the station, you’ll find yourself in the heart of the town, just a short walk from the market, the promenade, and the Plaza de la Constitución.
The town is known for its beautiful architecture and its lively atmosphere. One of the main attractions in Soller is the Sant Bartomeu Church, which is a beautiful example of Gothic architecture.
You can also explore the Torrent dels Montreals, which is a picturesque stream that runs through the town.
5. Winding through the streets
One of the most unique aspects of this historic train is how it winds through the streets of both Palma and Soller.
Within touching distance of the passing traffic, the journey certainly attracts attention from passers-by.
In Soller, the trams actually pass through bars and restaurants at some points as they navigate narrow, cobbled streets.
How do you book tickets for the Palma to Soller train?
The station has a ticket office but I’d highly recommend booking your tickets online (only available from 7 days in advance).
Not only does this guarantee you a seat but it also avoids a last-minute rush. Buy a combined ticket for the Soller Train and Tram for €30 per person return.
Another option is to book a Boat, Tram and Boat Guided Trip (rated 4.3/5 from 2500+ reviews), which not only includes your train and tram journey, but also pick up/drop off from where you’re staying, and a boat trip to explore La Calobra Cove.
